GO TO FRANCE

About me

I am one of the UK’s leading food and travel writers and an expert on France. I like nothing more than telling a good story, packed with expert insight and inspirational recommendations. I am a regular contributor to The Guardian and The Times as well as numerous other national publications. My travels have seen me cycle across France’s most remote islands, search out its most heavenly beaches, eat at revered restaurants and drink the country’s most delectable aperitifs for stories in National Geographic Traveller, National Geographic Traveller Food and BBC Good Food. Being fluent in French and the editor of France Magazine for nearly a decade means I have hundreds of excellent contacts throughout the country.

As author of Lonely Planet Food’s France: From the Source, I tracked down and interviewed 65 French chefs, cooks and bakers, translated their recipes and told the stories behind their classic dishes. It was a hugely rewarding project and built on my already extensive knowledge of French food and drink.
I am also an experienced communications specialist and have a part-time role working for the legendary Roux Family as Communications Manager for The Roux Scholarship, one of the world’s most prestigious chef competitions.

What I Do

Writing

Evocative colour features, an informative round-up, an interview or a feature that draws on all my skills – whatever you need, I can do it. French travel, food and drink are my specialities but, as a skilled journalist, I can turn my hand to any subject or style of feature.

Editing & copywriting

My experience of editing national newspapers and magazines has helped me develop a flair for reworking copy so it shines and engages. My naturally friendly and accessible writing style has depth, drawing in the audience to deliver the information and inspiration they need.

Communications consultancy

My wide-ranging experience and creativity allows me to consult on all aspects of communications: from advising on editorial design to providing a constant flow of creative ideas for marketing, PR and content. I write compelling press releases, edit websites and run inspiring social media campaigns.

Testimonials

“I worked as Carolyn’s editor on Lonely Planet’s From the Source: France over a period of several months spanning 2016 and 2017. During that time she heartily impressed me with her depth of knowledge of France and of French cuisine. Her dedication to recipe testing and chef chasing cannot be underestimated and, if you ask nicely, she may even sketch you a complicated dish or two. She’s a good-humoured collaborator, and I’d work with her again in a flash.”

Karyn Noble

Former editor, Lonely Planet

For a food and travel magazine like ours, France is naturally one of our most important destinations and it’s incredibly useful to have someone like Carolyn on hand ‹ someone who is so knowledgeable about France and French cuisine.”

Glen Mutel

Editor, National Geographic Food

Carolyn’s enthusiasm and passion for French gastronomy is legendary, as an accomplished writer she manages to put this passion into words that make you feel like you are there. It’s such a joy working with Carolyn on the Roux Scholarship and I know all of the judges and scholars appreciate the energy she brings to the table.
